Wanda Fish, Treasurer
I've lived in W. Henrietta, NY for 29 years but had no experience with greyhounds until I adopted Sly Sooner (now ‘Sly') in January, 2001. I still often wonder what my face looked like to the placement rep that brought Sly into my home. Sly hurdled the coffee table as if it wasn't there! My immediate thought was “What did I get myself into?” While we filled out the transfer of ownership, Sly stood with his head resting on my dining room table watching as papers were passed. Then I thought: “What if I had food on this table?” My fears did not last long and before I knew it I started volunteering to foster dogs waiting to be adopted. When Brenda co-founded GAGR, I offered to be the treasurer. I had fostered a few dogs and found that I preferred to give a home to the older hounds. Sly is now 10 and moves a little slower but still lives up to his name of being the Sly Dog! He lives to two other girls: Jillie who is 9 and sweet little “Daly” who is 8 years old.
I work for Rochester General Hospital as an Application Specialist and part time at a local Wegmans' store. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding making a donation to GAGR at donations@greyhoundadopt.org or (evenings at home) at 585-359-2669.
Margaret Fay Sugar, Adoption Support Coordinator
After all our children left the nest, it was kind of quiet and lonely around the house. I thought I'd like a four legged companion. I knew I wanted an adult dog, but had no idea what breed. Well meaning family and friends recommended a greyhound-we never had known anyone who owned one, nor ever seen one. I thought they look a little `out of perportion- head to body'. We read and educated ourselves and thought -MAYBE it would be the dog for us. After a home visit we had no doubt -it was love at 1st sight, they were the most beautiful dog we had ever met. November 22, 1996 Starlight Italy, a gorgeous, perfect 5 yr. old fawn came into our lives. She became my friend and companion. We called her Misha. Unfortunately her time with us was all too short-she died in September of that year. We so missed her. March of 97, a small shy, timid fawn with a black mask came to live with us -Willow. Feb 1999 a quiet, black and white female, Sadie, joined our family. Willow left us late in that year. Sept 2001, a foster home was needed for a older brindle `brood' with medical problems. That was Checkers, she came and of course stayed. We have enjoyed fostering and attending M&G's. In March of last year I began calling new adopters to see how their greyhounds were adjusting to their permanent homes and vice versa. I've had the priviledge/opportunity of talking to a `greyt' group of caring people. You all have so much concern, patience and love and acceptance for the new 4 legged family member. My husband Paul and I are now retired. We live in Holley and Sadie is almost 9 and Checkers 11. We're a couple of seniors living with a couple of seniors. Our many children and grandchildren live nearby. We all press our noses to the window waiting for them to stop by (with a treat of course). Seldom a day passes that one of them doesn't. You can reach Margaret Fay with any of your greyhound related questions at support@greyhoundadopt.org or by calling(585)638-5201.
